FGBC Annual Awards Spotlight Top Florida Green Certified Projects

The Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC), the leading certifier of green projects in the state, honored the top “Florida Green” certified projects.

“Congratulations to the winners and our members who are dedicated to improving the green built environment, sustainability and promoting its positive environmental, social and economic impact in our state,” said FGBC President Jeremy Nelson.

Neal Communities of Sarasota, Fla.  was named single-family Builder of the Year with most homes certified with 282. Gables Residential of Atlanta, Ga. was multifamily Builder of the Year with 400 certified homes.

Points are awarded by FGBC for each of the individual green certifying levels – bronze, silver, gold and platinum. Numerical points are given for selecting and integrating individual environmentally friendly green products, best practices and sustainable techniques from a menu of available green options.

The highest scoring single-family home was built by Mac and Jo McCarraher in Umatilla, Fla. with a score of 239. The Lucian by Alys Beach Lucian Development LLC in Alys Beach, Fla. was the peak multifamily home with a score of 230. Both reached the Platinum level of certification.

‘Florida Green” local government honors went to Platinum Certified Manatee County and Gold Certified Village of Wellington in the city category.

The West Building at City Place Doral in Doral, Fla. achieved a score of 184 in achieving Gold certification.

Blue Origin Manufacturing Technology Annex, Merritt Island, Fla., won for Commercial Project of the Year with a Bronze score of 119. Drew Smith of Two Trails, Inc., Parrish, Fla., was named Certifying Agent of the Year.

Projects are visited, reviewed and certified by a third party green verifier. With over 17,600 certifications since being founded in 2000, FGBC is by far the largest certifier of green homes, residential communities and local governments in the state.

Unlike other national and international certifications, FGBC are only standards developed with Florida-specific criteria. They address Florida’s hot-humid climate, environment, unique topography and natural disasters.

FGBC’s five certifications provide pathways to build green homes, developments, local governments, high rises and commercial buildings. The process, including low fees, is often more affordable than other certifications.  The free market aspect of FGBC certifiers also keep costs reasonable.
